Target: Conventions
6e10 Grade 6 PLNR02 English Language Writing Overall Expectations • use correctly the conventions (spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc.) specified for this grade level (see below).
6e14 Grade 6 PLNR02 English Language Writing Grammar – use verb tenses consistently throughout a piece of writing;
Mini- Lesson:
- Hand-out envelopes with various slips of paper.
- Slips will have a variety of sentences with both correct and incorrect conventions
- Students will read slips aloud in groups of 4, in order to hear and recognize whether the language sounds appropriate and correct. ( i.e. appropriate grammar)
- Review tricky ones on the board as a class.

Level 1 Exemplar
1. Target: Contains words taken directly from the text – student has trouble putting ideas into own words.
Mini Lesson:
- Have the student use graphic organizer to brainstorm own ideas about the texts
- Working form the main idea and moving out, using own words to describe the ideas
- After using the brainstorm activity/graphic organizer have the student write sentences using the graphic organizer, this will help translate the ideas from the text onto the page, but using more of students vocabulary and ideas.
Aids: Word Wall, List of descriptive words to help convey ideas, sentence starters (possible mini lesson) so that student does not begin each paragraph the same way.
2. Target: Writing paragraphs (not one sentence per paragraph)
Mini Lesson:
- Give student a jigsaw (cut up pieces of proper paper, paragraph form) and have them organize it into the proper flow. (intro, middle, end).
- Before writing on their own, work with teacher in guided writing conference.
- provide students with ‘hamburger paragraph’ type skeleton so they better understand how to organize their writing. (Introduction, ideas, conclusion).

This student's work is unorganized, and lacks structure in terms of use of paragraphs.
Target: Organization of student's ideas
Mini Lesson: There are numerous strategies that could be used with this student. These include:
- encourage student brainstorming of ideas before sitting down to write
- have students use organize their ideas using graphic organizers
- have students create an outline of their work before writing
- incorporate technology into the lesson by having students use SMART Ideas software
