Blue (Reading: Reading Process)

Guided reading involves low teacher involvement.  The students read text in a group or individually and have the teacher there as a guide.  The literature is commonly leveled books.
Guided Reading

Before Reading: Prepare for Reading
(e.g., elicit prior knowledge, build background and introduce genre, title and author)
 
Have them predict:
-what is the story about?
-who are the main characters?
-what are a king’s roles?
-what type of genre is it?
-what does the title mean? “Do you think the king actually tickled the moon?
 
 
 
During Reading: Guiding the Reading
(e.g., picture walk, reading strategies and focus questions)
 
-ask specific question on language?
-what does “His majesty” mean?
-ask predictions?
-- what will happen next?
-can the king reach the moon?
-how do you think that the king can reach the moon?
-what are other ways to make someone happy?
-ask about adjectives in the book, describing words
 
 
 
 
 
 
After Reading:
(e.g., reflect on reading strategies, build comprehension and extend the reading)
 
-ask the students what the main theme was?
-did they like the book? What was their favourite part?
-Discuss predictions
-- were they right?
-have them retell the story: what happened at the beginning? middle? what was the problem? how was it solved?
-go back to the story; revisit a page; How do you think the king felt at that point?
-Ask them about alterations: what could the king have built the tower with other than boxes? How else could the king have made the moon happy?
-Extend the story:
What do you think will happen next? How will the village stay happy? (Draw a picture and write in journal)
